From NewsLetter - A team from University College London and
the University of Newcastle upon Tyne has recently been appointed to coordinate
the development of the Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research
Network (DeNDRoN), led by Director Professor Martin Rossor and Co-Director
Professor Ian McKeith. The DeNDRoN team will coordinate a network of NHS staff
and resources across the UK with the aim of expanding the number and
participation in a range of clinical research studies of treatments for
conditions such as Alzheimer's disease and other dementing disorders,
Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease and Motor Neurone Disease. DeNDRoN
will build on the pre-existing disease networks such as the UK Huntington's
Disease Network and the networks of care and research in Motor Neurone
Disease and representatives from each of these networks have been appointed to
lead a Clinical Studies Group in those areas. Other Clinical Studies Groups in
dementia (Alzheimer's disease), primary health and social care, genetics
and neuropathology and brain banking will be established and all will lead
portfolio development in their specific areas. "The Dementias and
Neurodegenerative Disease Research Network will forge partnerships between
specialists in psychiatry and neurology together with teams in primary
care who treat this large group of patients with complex and often long-term
diseases. The network will offer unprecedented opportunities to bring the
latest clinical treatments and trials to people in the UK. The new scheme will
operate in close partnership with patient organisations to ensure that we are
addressing the research questions that are of most importance to them." Professor McKeith, Co-Director.
